Aug 10, 2018 - USMA at West Point

Our time in the Hudson River valley has been punctuated by a lot of rain. We had a one day window so we drove a little over an hour down to West Point. Lots to see here. We did take the guided bus tour which took us to the chapels, cemetery, main parade grounds and the overlook of the Hudson River. We spent a good deal of time watching the cadets sky diving, landing on the parade grounds. Lots of symbols and statues. We did miss the seeing the plebes who were out "camping" about 12 miles away... not your usual summer camping experience. We...

Aug 8, 2018 - Tour of West Point

This morning was spent on a wonderful tour of West Point Military Academy and museum visit. Nancy was surprised by all the new construction and growth changes of the academy since she was stationed here in 1990-93. We were both impressed by the beauty and elegant majesty of the place. The architecture and granite mass of the buildings is stunning. West Point is a place that every American should visit. Nancy enjoyed seeing the place where she had spent three years of her life serving and helping others. She ran into several folks who she...

Aug 7, 2018 - Travel to West Point Military Academy

Today we are driving westward through Massachusetts to West Point in New York. There are many long steep hills to climb around West Point, in the Hudson River Valley. Our camp spot was at the summit of one of these steep hills on a small pond in the West Point “Fam-Camp” military camp ground, a very nice facility.

Jul 12, 2018 - West Point Academy

Started out the day traveling to West Point NY. It was about 15 miles from the KOA. We had to get pre-approved to enter the Academy. This was done about a month ago. We stopped so a West Point guide could get on-board. After going through two check points, we drove to the main Chapel. Very large interior, but the most impressive part was the pipe organ. We took a 45 minute walking tour of the cemetery. We saw a number of famous people's grave markers like General Custer. They are about to run out of room in the cemetery. They built West...

Oct 3, 2017 - West Point and the Hudson River Sept 27 - 30, 2017

West Point Military Academy I have to tell you a couple of stories about the trip to West Point. We needed gas so we stopped at the turnpike service area. The pump we were heading for turned out to be a “full service” pump and the price was higher than we thought was reasonable just on principle. Tom thought we could just go around and select another pump. NOT SO!!!!!!! We ended up in the semi-truck area with no way out except to backup/turn around and exit the service area. Tom got it done but I was not really able to help because the...

Jul 28, 2016 - Meeting with an old friend

A little bit of Charlotte’s family history is needed here to explain this day. When Charlotte’s dad was vice principal of an American army high school in Eritrea, Charlotte, who was studying at the art academy in Munich Germany, decided to quit the academy and go down to be with her mom and dad. How many times do you get to see Eritrea? So she drove with a friend to Istanbul, took a plane to Cairo, and flew into Asmara, the capital of Eritrea. In case you’re not sure where Eritrea is, it’s above Ethiopia and just below Egypt. Her mom was...

Jul 27, 2016 - West Point Military Academy

Today we are up and going to West Point NY. We will be staying at the camp ground at the West Point Military Academy for two nights. Again a wonderful drive up, until we get to the campground, where there are steep hills and tight turns to get into the park. But we got in and settled and then drove over to the commissary to get some groceries. After storing the grub we checked out the RV park, which is built surrounding a small lake. Walking around the lake showed that it was about a mile around. They have RV sites, tent sites, and cabins...

Jul 19, 2014 - West Point Academy

Before leaving King George, Fred bought a new converter for the RV and installed it. No more problems now! We meandered northward toward West Point, our next planned destination, but stopped along the way to relax a couple of days in Pine Grove, PA at Twin Grove Resort. This park was large and busy with many seasonal visitors. The nearby town we checked out was rather dilapidated and showed signs that the area used to be industrial, but now this is primarily an agricultural area - we located a marvelous farm stand, had a great visit with...

Jun 11, 2014 - Bus Trip of West Point Military Academy

We had the day off today and planned to go to West Point for the tour, however, it looked like it might rain. We decided just to chance it and we were glad we did. We had a few sprinkles but most of the day was really quite nice although a little overcast. We had run finding the Visitor Center which is in the town of Highland Falls. There was signage getting you to the Visitor Center but it stopped at the town and then you were on your own. The Visitor Center doesn't have an address so when you follow your GPS you end up at the Business...

Oct 8, 2013 - Round Pond Fam Camp

After navigating the roads north to West Point.....several parkways don't allow rvs and we were ever watchful of low bridge crossings etc. We used the Goodsam Travel Planner and were generally pleased. We were a bit surprised when we CLIMBED the hill into the place.....the Dodge did great. The FAM camp turned out to be very nice. We took the bike out for a ride thru Bear Mountain Park and up the Hudson River by some massive estates! On the trip back south we took the road along the river called Storm King and then we rode through West Point...

Sep 11, 2013 - Sleepy hollow

We drove to Sleepy Hollow - not too sleepy now. Much traffic on the tap pan zee bridge to get here so we can see that we are getting closer to NYC. We had the choice of Kykuit the Rockefeller Estate of Philipsburg Manor. It was a shorter tour so we took it. Had it not been such a ride to get here and back, we could have done both. We took a guided tour of Phillipsburg manor that was established by a Dutch land owner prio to 1750. It is located on a tributary to the Hudson River and a grist mill was in place to make flour that was valuable,...

Sep 10, 2013 - Orange county choppers

Today we went back to Newburgh to see Orange County choppers. We only went to the showroom of Paul Sr, not sure if Jr.'s place is open to the public. The retail shop is really impressive with merchandise but many choppers on display. The one for the NY fire Dept was really impressive - in back of it there are shirts and badges from all the fire depts. across the county who have come to pay their respects. We also took the $5 tour of the factory and were able to see Rick chief engineer and Jason chief designer at work in the shop. There is a...
