Sep 30, 2008 - Whiteface Mountain

Whiteface Mountain is an Olympic mountain. The 1980 Olympic downhill skiing events were held at this place. It is the highest ski area elevation in the Northeast and has the greatest verticle east of the Rockies. That's only the beginning of what makes this a very impressive mountain. As we have mentioned in earlier postings, we are quite impressed with the mountains in the Northeast. Looking up from the base of Whiteface ski resort, you would guess you were in the Rockies, with the exception at this time of the year of the beautiful...

Aug 26, 2008 - Adirondack Mountains, NY

On Tuesday we arrived in Wilmington, NY about 10 miles outside of Lake Placid and in the heart of the Adirondacks. Lake Placid has the unique distinction of being the only U.S. city to have hosted the Winter Olympics twice – 1932 and 1980. The center of town is dominated by the Olympic Center, while the surrounding areas played host to the bob sled run, the ski jumps, downhill skiing, and ice hockey. The town of Lake Placid is a typical, quaint mountain town with Mirror Lake and Lake Placid providing gorgeous reflective backdrops for the...

Aug 5, 2008 - Wilmington, NY

Whiteface Mountain is here in Wilmington - that's where the skiing events took place in the Olympics. We're about 10 miles from Lake Placid - they held the Olympics there in 1932 & 1980 (when the US hockey team beat the Russians). I know I keep saying this, but a beautiful drive - this time into the Adirondack's.

Jul 25, 2008 - Wilmington, New York

It was a long day, but we are finally set up in our new campsite which will be our home for the next 4 weeks. This is a beautiful campground right in the heart of the high peaks region of the Adirondacks. Whiteface Mountain is just behind us. In fact, there is a trail at the back of the campground which connects to the main trail to the summit of the mountain. I guess I know where I’ll be getting my exercise. We came here to hike. This is so perfect. After we got off the interstate this afternoon, we followed the Ausable River to...

Jun 30, 2008 - Monday, Wilmington, NY (163 miles)

This drive took us past lake after lake, overflowing this time of the year with vacationers enjoying cabins right on the lakes. Canoeing and kayaking are very popular. The most famous was Lake Placid, known for hosting two winter Olympics, in 1932 and 1980. We camped a few miles north of it at Wilmington. The crowds around Lake Placid,as we drive through the town discouraged us from driving back there after we setup at the campground. Instead, we drove up the Whiteface Mountain Memorial Highway. The height is 4,867 feet at the summit, with...
